Merging Patches with TES5Edit

One of the best ways to reduce the number of plugins in a load order is to merge patches into one single plugin. This is both easy and safe to do for any mod list without knowing much about TES5Edit or having to use the Creation Kit.

Example of Patches to Merge

This example is going to merge two patches that each patch two mods. The mods that have patches which will be merged are Weapons and Armor Fixes, Guard Dialogue Overhaul, Diverse Priests, and Consistent Older People. The first two mods listed have a patch and the last two listed have a patch. The two patches will be turned into one and reduce the plugin count. This is an idea that works for many patches, so the more patches the further load order is reduced.

  • First, lets start by looking at a load order for just the mods listed with Skyrim.
[00] Skyrim.esm
[01] Update.esm
[02] Dawnguard.esm
[03] Hearthfire.esm
[04] Dragonborn.esm
[05] Spike.esm (from Guard Dialogue Overhaul)
[06] Weapons & Armor Fixes_Remade.esp
[07] DiversePriests.esp
[08] Guard Dialogue Overhaul.esp
[09] WeaponArmorFixes_GuardDialogueOverhaul_Patch.esp
[0A] SPTConsistentOlderPeople.esp
[0B] DiversePriests_ConsistentOlderPeoplePatch.esp
  • Now notice that there are two patches that only make two mods compatible ([09] & [0B]).
  • As a mod list grows this becomes more and more common as complex mods need patching with other mods and one solution is to merge all those patches into one plugin.

TES5Edit

  • Open the entire mod list in TES5Edit.
  • Work form the top down merging patches.
    1. For this example WeaponArmorFixes_GuardDialogueOverhaul_Patch.esp is the first patch in the list.
    2. Open the patch to the first level and highlight everything except Header File.
    3. Right click on one of the highlighted files and select Deep copy as override into....
    4. From the message box select <new file> and click Okay. Name the new plugin, for this example: Patch of Patches.
      • A message box will pop-up informing that the new plugin will have to have new masters.
      • Every plugin requires Skyrim.esm as a master. When merging a patch, the original mods that are being patched may also be required as masters.
    5. Now repeat 2 through 4 with DiversePriests_ConsistentOlderPeoplePatch.esp except choose the Patch Patch.esp instead of <new file>.
    6. This time the message box showed that both DiversePriests.esp and SPTConsistentOlderPeople.esp will be required as masters. This is normal.
  • Close TES5Edit and make sure to save the Patch of Patches.esp.
  • Both patches that were merged can now be removed from the load order and the Merged Patch.esp can load after it's last master file. (SPTConsistentOlderPeople.esp for this example)
    • This has reduced the load order from two patches to one. The idea behind this applies as there are more patches to merge and will further reduce load order.
    • The v2.2.8 STEP Core Patch does this for six plugins and the STEP Extended Patch does this for 15 plugins.

Apply the Example Elsewhere

For the above example almost any patch can be put in place of the WeaponArmorFixes_GuardDialogueOverhaul_Patch.esp. As long as the patch being merged is not required as a master, it can be merged.
