Warning-Logo.png Warning: This guide is currently being deconstructed! DO NOT USE!!!

I, Tech, am no longer maintaining this Guide. It is being deconstructed to be reconstructed on the new Step website.
The new 3.0 version will be much more well-rounded as I'm building it towards my vision of an "extended vanilla" Skyrim. Users can expect to see a fuller, more lively 'Old Kingdom' that stays true to its rough and cold nature. It's release will coincide with the release of the new Step website.

Introduction

Forum Thread: Feedback and more

What's new with version two (v2)?

For those of you finding this guide for the first time, please read the intro to the first version of the guide to understand the direction this guide will focus on, what it will and will not include, etc. Instead of repeating myself, I'd like to talk about what changes have been made to warrant the entire guide going to v2.

New mod manager

The guide has been moved away from Wrye Bash (WB) and switched to Mod Organizer 2 (MO2/MO). There are several reasons for this switch. The first being that recent releases of MO2 are very stable now. I had originally been waiting on Vortex to make a decision but, with no news of its release in sight, I decided to simply go with MO2 for the time being. MO2's recent gain in stability was the largest factor in the decision.

The second largest factor for the switch is the annoyance of mod authors not providing proper support for installing mods with WB. BAIN is a rather easy structure to learn and maintain, yet there are too many authors not doing it. I have taken a lot of my time to write Wizards for these author with a BAIN structured archive. It was my hopes these authors would, in the very least, take the opportunity to learn the BAIN structure. However, in reality, I can't get some authors to update their mods with the new archives I wrote for them. The ones that do provide the new archives with Wizards, end up negate all my work as soon as they update their mod because they didn't care to learn the new structure. I don't have ime to keep providing authors with updated archives that include Wizards, so it's time to abandon ship to a better platform!

An added bonus will be a potential reduction on storage space required for the guide. This is due to keeping the downloaded archives is now optional, rather than a requirement like it was with WB. I, personally, have saved nearly ~20Gbs be simply not keeping the downloaded archives. I have a good ISP so I can simply re-download anything I need in the future. This is a plus for me, because I also use the same SSD to author from so I have four MO installs total now.

Mod Categories

Below are the mod categories for downloading and installing individual mods. Users should be familiar with the installation process. I will not be explaining everything in detail so reference the Mod Organizer Guide as needed. Mods should also be installed and placed under the newly created markers, in the order which they are listed below. I will go into detail on how to install specific mods which are out of the normal realm for installation with MO.

Foundational Mods

The "foundational mods" are mods that provide a foundation which to build upon. These mods are most commonly large overhauls and will have a large number of overwrites to their files. At this time, users should create the category marker for this section and install the following mods. All mods in this section should be placed under the marker, in the order they are listed.

Static Mesh Improvement Mod - SMIM
Required by CR Patch

Download: Nexus

Description
Static Mesh Improvement Mod mod makes massive improvements to 3D models; making them less blocky and more natural looking. The main focus for SMIM are smaller objects (food, chains, ropes, clutter, etc), however, the mod does cover larger architecture as well (buildings, pillars, rocks, etc).

Installation

Guide Patches

The guide patches have been created by me so users needn't worry about patching this mod list. I highly suggest using them, but they are not required. Users doing their own patching may desire to skip them; however, they are relevant to the majority of users.

Conflict Resolution Patch (CR Patch)
The Conflict Resolution Patch (CR Patch) is required for this guide unless users are going to be custom patching the plugins themselves. This patch resolves all the record conflicts between mods listed in the guide and allows them to work together without issues.
Lighting and Weather Patch (LW Patch)
For users who have chosen to install the lighting and weather mods above, I have made a patch for the mods listed in that section. The CR Patch is still required! Users who are opting for different options for these type of mods will be on their own in patching their installs for the mods of their choice.
Inigo Patch - Nexus
Though not listed in the guide, I personally use Inigo as my follower. He is great and provides a lot of comical relief while playing. Inigo is probably one of the best follower mods you can have. Since I'm personally using him, I went ahead and provided a patch for him. The patch is specific for use with the mods listed in the guide. Currently, this is very minor patching. This is a separate patch, the other patches are still required!
Lanterns of Skyrim Patch (LoS Light Patch)
I created this patch to tone down the default orange tint that the lights in Lanterns of Skyrim produce. This is a simple change of the RGB values to add in more yellow and blue tones. The change reduces the harsh orange tint and brings the lights more inline with what a natural candle produces. I actually had a candle lit next to a flat-white wall as a reference for the tinting and tweaked it from there. This isn't exact, but it's closer to a natural tint than it was at default. Lanterns of Skyrim is obviously required to use this patch. I've kept it separate from the rest of the patches in case users want to opt for an alternative mod, such as CLARALUX, instead.

Each of the patches above require various mods to be installed in order to use them. These mods are labeled as followed throughout the guide for user's convenience:

  • Required by CR Patch
  • Required by LW Patch
  • Required by Inigo Patch
  • Required by LoS Patch

Download: Mega Cloud

  1. Select Download through your browser to download the archive.
  2. Install the archive.
  3. Move the patches not needed to the Optional ESPs.

Sort the Mods - LOOT

  1. Launch LOOT from the executable drop-down.
  2. Add the following LOOT Meta Rules:

Info-Logo.png      Notice:The meta rules are very important for the patches!
The rules are necessary for the plugins to be placed correctly so the patches will work correctly. Once they are added, sort the mods and close LOOT.

Building LOD with DynDOLOD

Now it's time to take care of those pesky LODs and make the distance views as pretty as possible. For this, DynDOLOD will be used. It's implementation for SSE is just starting to catch up with its classic Skyrim counterpart, but it's still far better than vanilla!

Updating DynDOLD

Users who are installing the guide for the first time, please skip this updating process and continue below.

Users who have already generated DynDOLOD and are updating will need to complete the updating process for DynDOLOD. This process is found in the user manual, which is installed with the program. I will summarize it here. Users needing more detail should refer to the manual.

  1. Travel to any interior.
  2. Save the game and exit.
This is the backup save just in case something goes wrong.
  3. Update to the latest DynDOLOD Standalone version; found in the Utilities section of this guide.
  4. Uninstall the DynDOLOD Output and TexGen Output mods.
Don't delete them until new ones are created. These are now the backup files. New ones will be created below.
  5. Update the DynDOLOD Resources mod, if a newer version is available.
  6. Load the game to the save completed in step 2. Once loaded, create a new save (don't overwrite) and exit.
The new save is now clean of the DynDOLOD plugin. This is the save to load after updating.
  7. Ensure the DynDOLOD_Output and TexGen_Output folders within the DynDOLOD program folder are empty.
Mine are located at: ..\Modding\Programs\DynDOLOD Standalone v2-26\
  8. Ensure the cache folder within the DynDOLOD program folder is empty.
Mine is located at: ..\Modding\Programs\DynDOLOD Standalone v2-26\Edit Scripts\DynDOLOD\cache\
  9. Users are now ready to generate new LODs. Continue below.

A Bashed Patch is very important and all users should be using one. Bashed Patches will "bash" together all the leveled lists in the game to work together without the need for manual patching. It'll also eliminate a few plugins by integrating them into the Patch, and will allow for some user customization to the game settings. A Bashed Patch is required for this guide!

Launching Wrye Bash

  1. Ensure the Overwrite folder is empty.
  2. Run Wrye Bash (WB) from the executable drop-down menu.

Building the Bashed Patch

  1. On the Mods tab, right-click on Bashed Patch, 0.esp and choose [Rebuild Patch...].
  2. Click [OK] on the new window.
  3. Click on the [Tweaks Settings] listing in the left pane (don't untick it!).
The following adjustments are optional. They are simply my personal preferences for the available tweaks. Right-click the listing to change the setting.
    • Set Arrow: Recovery from Actor to [50%]
I make this tweak because it makes sense that you'd be able to recover more arrows from bodies than the vanilla game allows.
    • Set Arrow: Speed to [1.4]
I make this tweak because the speed at which the arrows fly is too slow to be realistic, imo.
    • Set Crime: Alarm Distance to [Custom: 1200]
This is changed to be in line with the Stealth Skills Rebalanced mod by kryptopyr. This mod isn't included in the guide, but will be when it's ported.
    • Set Timescale to [Custom 15]
This tweak makes the time pass more slowly in-game, which is more realistic imo.
  4. Click the [Build Patch] button at the bottom.
  5. At the time of this writing, WB is completing the build, but hanging in MO2. Force WB closed.

Installing the Bashed Patch

  1. Reactivate the BetterQuestObjectives.esp and Tech's SSE Guide v2 - LoS Patch.esp plugins.
Note: leave all the rest of the deactivated plugins as is! They have been incorporated into the Bashed Patch.
  2. Double-click the Overwrite folder to see if the Bashed Patch has been placed within it. If so, skip to step 6. If it's not, please continue with the next step.
  3. Open the Skyrim SE data folder: ..\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\Data
  4. Drag the Bashed Patch, 0.esp into the Overwrite window and close it.
  5. Delete the original Bashed Patch, 0.esp from the Data folder.
  6. Right-click on the Overwrite folder and select [Create mod...]. Name it "Bashed Patch" or something similar, activate it, and ensure the plugin is checked.
  7. Sort with LOOT.

Fixing the Bashed Patch
Yes, we need to patch our new patch! Users shouldn't just trust automated patchers explicitly. There are a few forwards users will need to take care of manually:
  1. Load the entire mod list (minus deactivated mods) in SSEEdit.
  2. Make the following corrections:
    • 0010710D - forward Update.esm keywords
    • 00E7AEB - add Dawnguard.esm data flags
    • 0002E4E4 - forward the USSEP object bounds
  3. Close xEdit and save the Bashed Patch.
  4. Move the Batched Patch, 0.esp from the Overwrite folder to its mod listing.

ENB/ReShade Preset

Now is the time for users to decide if an ENB Preset will be used or not. Those users who installed the weather and lighting mods will need to ensure the ENB is compatible with these mods. ENB for SE is not as robust and feature rich as it is for Skyrim LE, so users will currently see a lot of presets with or centered around ReShade. These are not true "ENBs" as they are using ReShade solely, or to enhance the preset rather than relying solely on ENBSeries to accomplish their goals. I've listed a few presets below that are compatible with Vivid Weathers:

Users are free to choose and install the ENB of their choice, or no ENB at all. I will only recommend The Truth ENB because it's what I use and it is light-weight, simple, and enhances the vanilla color palette and effects rather than changing them altogether. Simply follow the instructions on the mod page for installing the Preset of choice. Users should keep in mind any "required" mods listed on the mod pages are not actually required, but rather only recommended by the author to achieve the same results as they have.

Finally, all users should run the game launcher and game to the main menu, then exit before continuing to BethINI below. This ensures all is well and in place for BethINI to work.

Running BethINI

The last step in this process to to run BethINI and choose the settings best for the individual system. I have provided recommendations below, but the settings are ultimately up to the user.

  1. Ensure the game has been ran and closed at least once so the INI files are created.
  2. Close MO2!
  3. Navigate to the BethINI folder installed earlier in the guide in the utilities section.
    Mine is located at: D:\Modding\Programs\BethINI\
  4. Run the BethINI.exe and choose Skyrim Special Edition for the game selection.

Setup Tab
I recommend ticking the Always Select Game and Make INIs Read-Only boxes. Make sure all the paths are correct and you have the correct profile selected.
Basic Tab
I recommend the following:
  • Windowed Mode
  • Borderless
  • Vsync
  • Recommended Tweaks
Additionally, I use the Ultra Preset.
General Tab
I recommend the following:
  • Intro Music
  • Disable Tutorials
Gameplay Tab
I recommend the following:
  • Always Run by Default
  • Over-Encumbered Reminder: 60
  • NPC User Ammo
Interface Tab
I recommend the following:
  • Fix Map Menu Navigation
Detail Tab
I recommend the following:
  • Particles: 6000
  • Disable LensFlare
View Distance Tab
I recommend the following:
  • Grass Fade: 18000
Visuals Tab
I recommend the following:
  • Grass Density: 60 to 75 (required for Veydosebrom)
  • Grass Diversity: 15 (required for Veydosebrom)

When finished customizing the selections for BethINI, return to the Basic tab and select [Save & Close].
